There's plenty of reasons Americans hate California:
- Extremely high living costs
- Significant hippie population
- Lots of studios with huge corruption
- Most restrictive and confusing gun laws in country
- Incompetent leadership
- Los Angeles area dominates entire political landscape of state

Most importantly: Any hipster stereotype you can think of applies to a Californian. They can be insufferably smug, incredibly pretentious, and obnoxiously blind to their faults. Despite all this they're portrayed extremely positively in media because most media comes from there.
