No, it was pretty much the exact opposite, with no one knowing what they did.
I haven't been able to find a clip of the ending, but I remember what the very last solider being interviewed said.
"I worked in a bank before the war. I'd left to go and fight in 1915 and I returned to the bank after the war had finished to see if I could get my old job back."
"The first thing the manager said to me when I came through the door was "We haven't seen you a while, Where have you been?"."
If your English is up to it, I'd highly recommended watching They Shall Not Grow Old if you're interested in the more personal side of history, as not only have they recoloured a bunch of old footage, but they also got professional lip readers to transcribe what the soldiers being filmed are saying and voice actors to repeat it.
It's just like someone jumped in a time machine and filmed it with a modern camera.
The ending in particular where the veterans spoke of how they were treated when they returned home stabbed me right through my heart.
