You are almost actively punished if you don't own a vehicle in the suburbs since a lot of commercial and business districts are built outwards and away from from these places of dwelling. To add more insult to any would be on-foot pedestrian already having to walk great distance to get anywhere, droves of fast moving vehicles and few, very inconvenient crosswalks/road signals makes the experience all the more hostile and dangerous.
As someone who lives in suburbia, I can confirm that they are trash. The overabundance of winding roads that end in cul-de-sacs and the car dependency makes them an utter nightmare. American suburbs are just far too expensive to maintain. There's also the fact that suburbanites have the worst health.
