Fun fact: Whataboutism was popularized by the Nazis who, knowing they didn't have an excuse for their hostile takeover of other countries nor their horrendous abuse of minorities, pointed to England for it's past imperialism and the US for it's civil rights issues as a way to say "Well how come you get to do it?" despite England no longer being the colonial monster it once was in the age of exploration, the US's segregation being a far cry from the widespread war crimes of Germany, and the fact that it did not make it ok.

So whenever someone tries to deflect with "whatabout", remember that they're unironically using a debate tactic developed by fascists that's fundamentally flawed due to it doing nothing to fix the problem at hand.
