He served in the Iraqi army during the Iran Iraq War and told us that the Iranians frequently used orphaned children as suicide bombers. According to him, the children were fitted with suicide vests and told that they could be reunited with their parents in heaven, which was just beyond the Iraqi trenches. The Iraqi soldiers couldn't bring themselves to fire on the children who basically stopped at the wire obstacles and their vests were remotely detonated by the Iranians. The interpreter said he was repairing a wire obstacle after a detonation one day and found a child's hand clutching a plastic toy key with a tag attached to it. The tag read in Farsi, "This is your key to heaven. Whatever you do, don't let go of it".
