Its because back in the early 2010s a lot more normal people used to use twitter so it was a good gauge for public opinion. Then the tumblr exodus happened and drove away a lot of the normies. Its also ludicrously easy to get something to trend with a little astroturfing. Some corporations haven't woken up to that fact yet. Then again, its not always twitter itself, but journalists using twitter to make it look like there's more of a public outcry on something than there actually is.
