593 B r/AmItheAsshole ours ago AITA for expecting a teacher to have spare pencils in their classroom? This is a throwaway account for privacy reasons. My husband, my son (boy, 9) and I recently relocated to one of the European countries due to my husband's work. Ethan (my son) started local school recently (he speaks the language as my husband is from this country so he taught Ethan the language) and it's been a struggle to say the least. At 9, children are expected to keep their stationery in a pencil case and they take it home and have to remember to bring it back to school the next day (they're 9, they're not going to do that but whatever). It has pens (kids here write with lens or fountain pens, like what?), pencils, coloured pencils, etc. Well, obviously, he lost half his stuff and didn't have his pencils one day. He asked the teacher to get a pencil and the teacher told him to ask his class mates if someone can lent him one. He got one but forgot to give it back. It happened twice. Apparently, because of that, the third time he didn't have his pencil, none of his peers wanted to lent him one and the teacher asked the class if anyone was willing to share. One girl did but when he was leaving school, she ran up to us and asked for it back which I thought was rude. Her parents were nowhere to be found because apparently, kids here walk to school (irresponsible much?). Anyway, I got fed up and asked for a meeting with the teacher and requested that she has pencils ready for the kids. She told me that it was child's responsibility to take care of their stuff and mine to make sure he brings his pencil case. I found it incredibly rude, he's a child, he shouldn't have to worry about that. I'm thinking of bringing it up with the principal as the teacher was very dismissive but I posted in school Facebook group. Surprisingly, all the parents were on the teacher's side. They claim (which I find it hard to believe) that their kids have no problem with taking care of their pencil case and apart from occasionally losing something, they even finish the year with the same items in it. I truly find it hard to believe, they're kids. But it was so many parents who claimed the same and said it's perfectly normal and they'e dome the same in school. I'm conflicted now, have I run into some weird cultural norms were children are expected to be little adults? I want to make sure I, in the right before going to the principle. ASKING FOR A FRIEND: "I love my 7-year-old son's name, "Andrew," but I hate the nickname "Andy." When we named him "Andrew" we agreed to only use the long version and never the nickname... We moved over the summer, and somehow he has become "Andy" in his new school! ... I made an appointment with the teacher to discuss the situation. She apologized and said that she would call him Andrew. She said she would make one class announcement. As you can imagine, this has been totally ineffective. All the kids are still calling him Andy. I made another appointment with the teacher, but she was not helpful. She said that Andrew never objects to being called Andy and sometimes even introduces himself as Andy. To me, this is irrelevant. He is 7 years old, I am his mother, and I get to decide what people call him. She is not willing to correct the other students in the moment when they call him Andy. I would like to take this matter to the principal. My husband feels like I'm overreacting... If we don't get this under control now, he will be "Andy" for the rest of his life!"
