And, iirc, French people were extremely shocked by the South African apatheid & Jim Crow laws in the 60s & 70s. Its so important here that, as a kid, I remember that being called a racist in school was the worst. You'd feel something in your stomach, as if you had done something very wrong, and pleaded a lot to be recognized as a non-racist (fearing both teachers & parents reprisals).
