BTW not really, they did for a time, but then the Union Army had to return back and the South just stopped calling it slavery and called it other names such as Black Code and Labor Contracts. Chattel slavery was actually ended at the start of the second world war because it could be used as propaganda against US. How did they ended it?, the president just wrote a memo to the court that now you had to use the correct term (slavery) and to start prosecuting those cases as part of the war effort. Last US Chattel slave was freed in 1942, and he was found being whipped. If you really want to have a bad time and have a heartbreaking look at history this video explains it:

Now why this is not taught in American schools? because is way too horrible. Hey kids turns out we had slavery until 1942, and we only stopped it because it made us look bad in the WW 2 propaganda machine is an awful look.
