Here's the massive difference: Ratchet and Clank was a serious focused on gunplay, dark comedy, and critique of capitalism. An edgier take made sense and even compliments the story.

Sonic the Hedgehog is a series about a fast, cool-by-90-standards hedgehog who throws wisecracks and hangs out with his animal friend to defeat a big egg man. An edgier take is almost like a parody at that point.
