They were supposed to return but companies realized it was much cheaper not to do them and didn't really impact the bottom line, so they're gone forever FREE SAMPLES | RINGTONES Between 2000 and 2007ish, teenagers used to have unique ringtones and take great pride in them There used to be companies that sold ringtones for like $4.99 apiece and commercials on Disney and TeenNick NET NEUTRALITY FEAR ROTARY/SERVICE CLUBS LANDLINES Then it just...quietly went away, I'm not even sure what In the fall of 2017, everyone was freaking out about Net Neutrality and labeling Ajit Pai as Satan Back in the 1950s-60s, almost every adult male was part of Rotary, Shriners, Lions' Club, or some other charitable organization If you're older than 20, you probably remember that before 2005-ish, everyone had landlines in their home and only one person could be on the phone at once happened with Net Neutrality nor do I care Now kids are handed iPads and parents are taught that every stranger is a r----- ax murderer B Now children are Vitamin D-deficient hamplanets with no socialization Ajit Pai follows me on Twitter lol Now the clubs are full of old men and will almost certainly be extinct by 2050 Then everyone just sorta stopped doing it and Facebook discontinued pokes in 2021 TAYLOR LAUTNER Was a male heartthrob in pretty much every teen movie between 2008 and 2013 Then he virtually retired from acting and now he's living a quiet life as a dad If a politician or journalist made a false or misleading statement, it was considered polite to publicly apologize Then starting with the Bush administration and accelerating through the 2010s, they just...stopped admitting they were wrong, and dug in and doubled down instead Was super hyped up as a virtual reality marvel in the early 2010s Also had you your landline numbers memorized G friends' GOOGLE GLASS There were all sorts of public demonstrations and Reddit collectively nutted There was one phone per family and it had to be shared But sales fell far below expectations and Google quietly discontinued it in 2020 CURSIVE The dog died in 2009 and Taco Bell has cringe marketing now Until around 2010, every schoolchild learned cursive, because that was what things were written in Now because of the rise of technology, it's obsolete. Modern kids. can't even read cursive, much less write in it. KIDS PLAYING OUTSIDE FACEBOOK "POKES" POLITICIANS ADMITTING TACO BELL CHIHUAHUA 3D/CURVE TVS When I was a kid during summer break my THEY'RE WRONG Between like 2009 and 2015, everyone was getting in poke wars with one another mom would send me outside and tell me to be back by dark. Hijinks ensued: swimming, bug hunts, tree climbing Extremely popular mascot of Taco Bell in the 90s It was a cute and wholesome meme that connected people with each other Instead of being retired, it was quietly phased out In the late 2000s, they were marketed as the next big thing and luxury Christmas gifts Have you seen Gen Z handwriting and signatures? Tough nuts, now every ticket is a QR code TICKET STUBS RONALD MCDONALD Mascot of McDonald's for 50 years Then the reputation of clowns tanked with the killer clown pranks of 2016 and the release of IT in 2017 NUNS Women who got pregnant before marriage, or who were raised in religious families, used to be sent to convents Then in like 2014 everyone got tired of the gimmick and everyone just watches regular TVs instead Now the average* age of a nun in the US is 82, and only very few Americans are becoming nuns anymore although the practice is alive and well in Europe and the Philippines Ronald was quietly discontinued LACK OF CAMERAS IN PUBLIC It used to be that you could go outside and reasonably expect to be able to have a private conversation or meeting without being under surveillance Now if you live in a city, there's virtually no place that isn't being filmed While this has severely reduced the incidence of crime, it feels rather dystopian
