DEVELOPERS' NOTES The Sheikah were built around the concept of a group who live in a hidden village away from the eyes of the world. I gave their outfits a very Japanese aesthetic so you could distinguish them from the other characters in the game at a glance. Initially, we were going to make Paya (page 105) a very young girl, but since there were very few girls around Link's age in the world, we decided to change her design and make her somewhere between eighteen and twenty years old. I also tried to give each of the ten-thousand-year- old monks (page 108) in the shrines distinct looks, which meant I had to find ways to differentiate all one hundred and twenty of them using their hats, accessories, and poses. The Yiga Clan (page 108) is also made up of Sheikah. We were trying to figure out how to work assassins who would attack Link on sight into the game and trying to work out why they would attack Link. We thought it would be interesting to have Sheikah who hated and were betrayed by the royal family of the kingdom of Hyrule and wanted to exact some kind of revenge. The idea expanded from there.
