Record Labels Hit Internet Archive With New $400m+ Copyright Lawsuit August 12, 2023 by Andy Maxwell Record labels including UMG, Capitol and Sony have filed a copyright infringement lawsuit in the United States targeting Internet Archive and founder Brewster Kale, among others. Filed in Manhattan federal court late Friday, the complaint alleges infringement of 2,749 works, recorded by deceased artists, including Frank Sinatra, Billie Holiday, Louis Armstrong and Bing Crosby. As the Internet Archive continues to deal with an adverse ruling in a copyright infringement lawsuit filed by the world's largest publishing companies, late Friday some of the world's largest record labels launched similar legal action in the United States. Jayne, a skeleton inside a meat sack @dotjayne@tech.lgbt If you ever doubt that billionaires are completely alien compared to the other 99.9999% of us, remember that out of the ~400 tech billionaires out there, not a single one has stepped up with their pocket change to make a life-changing donation to the Internet Archive or the now defunct Living Computers Museum. Out of 400 supposed techies, not a single one has an interest in data preservation or retro computing?? Jenniferplusplus @jenniferplusplus@hachyderm.io This is your occasional reminder that publishers were already preparing their lawsuit against the Internet Archive in 2019, before the pandemic, and before the archive relaxed their lending restrictions. The Internet Archive is a target merely for existing. The nature of the IA is to be a challenge to the ownership of information as capital. There is nothing they could do to mollify publishers. AI companies could create some torrent compiling all the scanned books in the public domain from Wikimedia Commons, Google Books and The Internet Archive. Update: The Internet Archive is up again, and <a href="https://twitter.com/internetarchive/status/1663001853964189697">they said</a> that it may not have been the responsability of an AI company.
