November 20, 1962 Dear Captain Burroughs: I enclose the photos I mentioned on the phone. These include the priginal, which is of course very valuable, and whibh I should return to Mr. Sanderson, and various enlargements. About this photo Mr. Sanderson wrote: "Enclosed is a very valuable original photo... It is alleged to have been taken from a height of 500 feet by a Belgian military pilot over the Congo. In this photo under a strong lense it looks almost surely as if the vegetation covering the right- hend upper third is trees as you can see tiny leaves on the branches just as African acacias grow. Further, the two black spots in the upper left hand quadrant are quite plainly termite nests, or rather, their shadows. Under high power you can very easily see this, and that the top one is a column, circular in horizontal section, while the bottom one is typical of the flange types that always point north-to-south. This means that this photo was taken from a great height, for there is no such thing as one inch termite nests. And that makes the snake 200 feet long!.... "There have been countless reports from the Kamina area of giant s aakes, and we have the part-skeletons of presumed extinct forms that, from the size of their rib-cases, should, giovn the normal proportions of pythons, for instance, have been 200 feet long. Proof of this photo's authenticity would be a great triumph." I shall be much interested to see what you can make of this. The main thing is to establish the height at which the photo was taken.
