About

Giant Congo Snake or 50 Foot Congo Snake refers to an alleged sighting and photograph, taken in 1959, of what appears to be a 50-foot-long snake in the Katanga region of the Congo. In 1980, pilot Remy Van Lierde shared the photograph and story of the sighting on an episode of Arthur C. Clarke's Mysterious World, alleging that when they flew their helicopter near the snake it reared up as if about to strike, leaving shortly after. The claims circulated online throughout the 2000s and became notably popular on TikTok in mid-2023 as users began sharing photographs of the Congo jungles that they believed showed further evidence of the snake. The authenticity of Van Lierde's photograph has been questioned, but was allegedly authenticated.

Origin

On November 11th, 1980, pilot Remy Van Lierde appeared on an episode of Arthur C. Clarke's Mysterious World titled "Dragons, Dinosaurs and Giant Snakes" where Van Lierde alleges that he and two other witnesses saw a 50-foot long snake in the Katanga region of the Congo in 1959 (shown below). Van Lierde claims that when he saw the snake, he turned the helicopter around and got closer, inspiring the snake to rear up as if about to strike. They then flew away from the snake. The episode was uploaded to YouTube[1] by Forgotten Documentaries in December 2021.

Along with the story, Van Lierde shares an alleged photograph of the snake (shown below, left). The photograph was also allegedly examined by CIA Captain Lorenzo W. Burroughs, who wrote a letter about the photograph (shown below, right). It has been speculated that the snake is either an oversized African rock python, a new species of snake, or a descendant of the giant Eocene snake Gigantophis.

A8 WA00 Captain Lorenzo W. Burroughs, 010, Plans and Evaluations, 8th Reconnadèsance Technical Squadron, Westover Air Force Base, Massachusetts. November 20, 1962 Dear Captain Burroughs: I enclose the photos I mentioned on the phone. These include the priginal, which is of course very valuable, and whibh I should return to Mr. Sanderson, and various enlargements. About this photo Mr. Sanderson wrote: "Enclosed is a very valuable original photo... It is alleged to have been taken from a height of 500 feet by a Belgian military pilot over the Congo. In this photo under a strong lense it looks almost surely as if the vegetation covering the right- hend upper third is trees as you can see tiny leaves on the branches just as African acacias grow. Further, the two black spots in the upper left hand quadrant are quite plainly termite nests, or rather, their shadows. Under high power you can very easily see this, and that the top one is a column, circular in horizontal section, while the bottom one is typical of the flange types that always point north-to-south. This means that this photo was taken from a great height, for there is no such thing as one inch termite nests. And that makes the snake 200 feet long!.... "There have been countless reports from the Kamina area of giant s aakes, and we have the part-skeletons of presumed extinct forms that, from the size of their rib-cases, should, giovn the normal proportions of pythons, for instance, have been 200 feet long. Proof of this photo's authenticity would be a great triumph." I shall be much interested to see what you can make of this. The main thing is to establish the height at which the photo was taken. The article has not yet gone to Science. I am hoping the redrawing of the Di Canerio bit can be done in time to be included. With best regards, Sincerely yours, Charles Hapgood
