A magazine advertisement for Final Fantasy VIII. In 1999, this title was very highly anticipated, being the sequel to the most popular RPG ever released on consoles outside of Japan (outside of Japan, VI sold 400 thousand copies whereas VII sold 6 million copies on the PS1 alone).

September 9 was also the American release date for Sega's Dreamcast, and with it a variety of major games such as Sonic Adventure, Soul Calibur, and the 2K Sports series. September 9th was also the day of the widely watched 1999 MTV Video Music Awards and the launch of two news programs from NBC, so overall it was a busy day for media in the USA.
