r/SmilingFriends ⚫ 20 days ago ObviouslySteve All the "Smiling friends is gonna be the next Rick and Morty and become annoying" posts are driving me INSANE Discussion Both here and on Smiling Friends Twitter these posts are inescapable. All the posts are exactly the same: they claim Smiling Friends is destined to become "annoying" and act like it's an original take, despite the million other posts saying the exact same thing. These posts annoy me for so many reasons: 1. They imply that a show having an annoying fan base means the show itself will become annoying and bad. You can very simply ignore the fan base and just watch the show if you find it that annoying. ... 2. They imply this is destined to happen, as if it happens to every show. Not every show is Rick and Morty! Just because it's on Adult Swim doesn't mean it's the same situation! 3. Having a larger fan base is a MASSIVE positive for the show. Did Rick and Morty get canceled after the Scezhuan incident? No, they got picked up for a massive deal (I might be wrong on the timeline here, but point is the "annoying" fan base has not led to its cancellation). Having a bunch of tacky knock-off R&M bongs at every smoke shop doesn't mean the show sucks it means the show is so successful Adult Swim doesn't even need to pay for all the additional brand recognition it gets from R&M being stoner icons. 4. It's a self-fulfilling prophecy! If "smiling friends will become annoying" becomes a widespread sentiment it's inevitable a single person will make a single annoying post then all these guys will be like "welp, there it is, Smiling Friends is annoying now." Feels like all these people want it to happen so they can say they saw it coming. 5. Making these posts doesn't help the fanbase, it actively hurts it. If you're so concerned about the show's fanbase becoming annoying, you know what you can do? Not be annoying! Just be a normal fan! You're clearly a fan if you care enough to make a post like this, you're not above it all. Simply don't be an annoying Smiling Friends fan and then, boom, there's your evidence that the Smiling Friends fanbase isn't annoying: yourself! Idk guys, I'm trying not to get obsessed with pointless TV discourse on the internet, and I recognize the irony in me saying "You don't need to be annoyed by a show's fanbase" only to make a post annoyed with the fanbase. I just think it's a really stupid sentiment that I'm tired of seeing spread like wildfire.
