Which is probably the most damning example possible, because you can't GET a more general audience than that, and the reaction was clear. People genuinely do like AI stuff, the whole scene has been so thoroughly poisoned with the worst PR imaginable that, to the average person, AI generation is practically synonymous with scams and poor quality.
