The wild elephants of the world - especially young males are heading off the deep end. They are viciously attacking humans and other animals. That's what a number of prominent elephant researchers told writer Charles Siebert. His story about it will be in this Sunday's New York Times magazine. Earlier, Charles Siebert spoke with my colleague, Alex Chadwick. ALEX CHADWICK, host: Charles Siebert, the cover line for this article is: Are We Driving Ele- phants Crazy? And the answer seems to be yes. Give me an example of crazy elephant behavior. Mr. CHARLES SIEBERT (Writer): Well, there are two. All over India and Africa, elephants are in unprec- edented numbers charging out and attacking villagers and villages. Un- provoked attacks, as though scheming these attacks. And villagers are now digging trenches. Around this one vil- lage I went to in Uganda, they had a massive trench with thorny brush put in it to keep the elephants at bay. But the most immediate thing that sticks out that really got researchers thinking twice is that in a number of South African game reserves, young elephants - male elephants - have been r----- and killing rhinoceroses. Sexual molestation of rhinoceroses prior to goring them with their tusks. Sometimes, since elephants have vast penises, rhinos die from internal bleeding. Literally like roving - they were like wilding gangs, if we can allow for that kind of anthropocentric analogy. But analogies are just - so scream at you that you can - however or what- ever word you want to use, it's just there and undeniable. CHADWICK: Well, what are the circumstances for elephants who are living in these places that you write about. What are things like for them? Mr. SIEBERT: By and large, there are just very few fully protected, undisturbed elephant herds anymore in either India or Africa. And clearly what's happening is encroachment, human encroachment. There's been a lot of culling to reduce size of herds to allow for further human expansion, poaching, of course. And what they're starting to put together, the researchers - like Gay Bradshaw, sort of the piece pivots around - she started looking past the normal explanations for this kind of aggression from elephants, which is that, oh, they're just competing with us for remaining resources. But she took it to another level and found that a lot of the elders are being killed and the elders are so important - just as they are in our society - for raising the young, especially the matriarchs. And in the absence of those matri- archs and of the male elders, these young elephants are being brought up without any correct supervision and are unable to actually control their emotions and that's the basic context, that the fraying of this intricate social web is also what's behind this ele- phant aggression, not just competition for resources. CHADWICK: You mention an- thropomorphism, and I think about that throughout this entire article, the confusion, if you will, of animal behavior with human behavior, some- thing that serious scientists really caution against. But you write about it as though it's something we should accept. Mr. SIEBERT: Yeah, it's a very fascinating devel- opment, I think, in science of late. And I wrote about it in a previous piece for the Times called Animal Personality, which is this newly emerging science. There's just something so incontrovertible about it. L W in e E And then it sort of places C upon us a dual burden. It makes us think about the way our society is put to- gether and how we need to maintain or fix its own rifts. But it also places upon us a question of what do we do, how do we respond to the fact that we're causing another animal like this to psychologically suffer in the ways that it is.
