Increasingly complex social groups layed claim to particular areas and protected them fiercely. However, rather than maintaining control through bloodshed, Ferengi engaged in trade. Groups that held mineral rich areas, for example, would exchange their holdings for food from the humid swamps, and a complex network of decentralized commerce developed that was formalized in the creation of the Ferengi Alliance under which most modern Ferengi live. The Alliance was financially deregulated but aggressively socially conservative towards females. It remained so until the work of the Ferengi Ishka and her son Rom began social liberalization.
