![madeleinekodat i have never been this angry in my life Today, a straight white guy in my poetry class started talking about how he was sick of reading poetic narratives relating to the oppression of minorities/queers /women because "it's been done so many times before" and "we get it, [these people] are victims, now let's do something else".. this is someone who fancies himself an ascetic and I'm pretty sure also identifies as a communist and talks about Occupy a lot I was sitting between one of my best friends/favourite people in this school who with what I can gather from our conversations, is at least somewhat invested in his identity as a gay African-American poet, and this other girl from my small-group conference within the workshop who is also African American and is just the most genuinely sweet person and my friend got so so upset and started velling at this guy (who instead of admitting his error got extremely defensive) and then the girl raised her hand and had the most incredibly worded rebuttal of SWG's earlier statement and he was just such a d--- to her and she started crying and she had to hold my hand to calm down and then l started crying and oh my god this is the most awful thing I have had to experience in weeks How does this much ignorance exist in the world? How dare you say that these things that really happened and disenfranchised millions of people and ruined millions of lives are not important or relevant? Check your f------ privilege I'm trying not to belabor what happened too much bc I know my teacher had him stay behind after class but I just keep hearing "we get it, you're a victim" over and over in my head... You're in a f------ poetry class, don't you know how powerful/hurtful words can be? I guess it was reaffirming in a way, for me to realize that this is the kind of thing that language is capable of and that is why it is so important to me but I just can't get over how horrific it felt to see that happen.
