Twilight and Spike pursues the thief through the mirror to win back the Element of Magic. This concept is just about as stupid as it sounds, but thankfully, they manage to pull off a few quite good and self aware visual gags. Said visual gags aren't enough to keep this movie up sadly. The animation notably takes a complete nosedive at this point, which is kind of distracting, but you get used to it eventually. Twilight and Spike are so confused over just about everything in this new world, she has to sing about it or not. There's a song about it, but she doesn't acctually sing it, it just plays together with a few quick montages, which is the case for every song in the movie except for the one out of the bunch that is good. Think Disney's Tarzan and you've got a good idea of what is going on in this movie. Speaking of the quality of the songs, this has to be one of Daniel Ingrams lowest points of his career sadly. Every song sounds just the same, generic tween pop-rock that comes into one ear and goes straight out the other, completely unmemorable. It's a full reenactment of their first meeting in the pilot episode of the show, but while that scene was played well and clever, this one is completely out of place and forced, and clearly only put in there to please the fans. Or because they couldn't think of a different way to reintroduce Fluttershy Either way is bad. Fluttershy tells Twilight that the crown is now in possession of Principal Celestia, who tells Twilight that it's to be used for the upcoming Fall Formal dance. Sadly, she has to be one of the weakest antagonists in FiM history. She's down there with Gilda, T Sunset Sh Lightning Dust, only she has no real presence in this movie, kinda like King Sombra, only King Sombra managed to be more menacing. We are told she's an old student of Celestia and grew impatient in her quest for power (something that's never elaborated on) and left for the human world. Why she would go to a place with no magic in search of since she clearly isn't content with "ruling" a petty high school. Sunset Shimmer is your classical high school bully and bitch. She has no real reason to be that way, onther than power is beyond that she's got no grasp or concept over general social behaviour. Her threats never go further than to embarass those who oppose her, and even then, it's her somewhat out of character lackeys Snips and Snails, who do the nasty work for her. Her plans to thwart Twilight in her quest to become Princess of the Fall Formal are so incredibly weak and poorly thought out, you'd think she acctually doesn't care wether or not Twilight wins the competition, but rather just f--- around with her. While the only thing she does to accomplish this is o suggest that it might've been Sunset Shimmer who dragged them apart with lies, it's the others who become friends again on their own in the end largely without Twilight's interference. Of course Twilight is solely credited for bringing them together again, and they all agree on helping Twilight win the Princess of the Fall Formal by convincing the rest of the school to unite and be friends with eachother, the reasoning being that Twilight is the bringer of friendship to the school and deserves to be Princess over Sunset Shimmer. The rest of the movie is basically Twilight and her friends convincing the school that Twilight is a deserving winner of the Princess of the Fall Formal, while thwarting the poor schemes of Sunset Shimmers attempts to disqualify her. Flash Sentry is your super generic wonderboy who Twilight gets a crush on, seemingly for the only reason that she bumps into him alot. They both fall for eachother very fast, and it's obvious they have feelings for eachother all the time. Flash Sentry is probably the flattest boy character this franchise has ever produced, and he has no point of existing other than to bring up a pointless romance subplot in the movie that doesn't lead to anything other than a tacked on foreshadowing scene in the very end, which appearently won't lead to anything either if we are to trust the word of Meghan McCarthy, head writer of the show. Not only is he flat and boring, he's acctually the ex boyfriend of Sunset Shimmer, if you could belive the incredible genericness of this pointless subplot. There's no sense of adventure or distress, it's just another super average high school teen drama, with lit conflict or suspense. The movie hits all the classical high school tropes but doesn't dare experiment or explore beyond those boundaries. The only thing that keeps this movie watchable is the fact that the characters really are the characters we know and love from the show, and it just becomes interesting to see them do new stuff again after such a no actual long time. But even this is not without flaws, because the characters are somewhat flanderized (except for Applejack, because there's nothing to flanderize about her). For example, human Rainbow Dash doesn e an appearance until there's about 30 minutes left of the movie, but she manages to spout "AWESOME" 7-8 times, which just becomes weird The movie goes on with happy dancing and singing and joyful preparations for the Fall Formal dance without any interesting plotpoints or any suspense, and takes a complete turn in the climax, as if it was taken from a completely different movie. Things go generic Mahou Shojou anime pretty quick and is completely out of place from the rest of the movie, but it's also the most interesting and a lesson Twilight have learned numerous times before but conveniently forgets isually the most impressive part of the movie. It might be entertaining for die hard fans of the show, but it might split your mental view of the show in half if you decide to watch it as well. This whole movie was, in more than one sense, outlandish for the franchise and completely unnecessary from a storytelling point of view. It has no reason to exist, and the story couldve been redone much more differently and gotten the same end result, but with a better movie behind it. The story and setting are s boring and confusing that one can only find amusement in the characters, if you already happen to love them. The songs are extremely bland crap and are completely forgettable, except for one song number, which is by far the movies high point. Sadly, the scene is much too short to bring any redemption to the movie as a whole. In the end, one even wonders why this movie was made. The answer is obviously that Hasbro wants new kind of toys to sell and wants to milk FiM, their most popular girl franchise on it to gain maximum profit. Huge gamble with little reward, that is totally not worth it in the end. What's really scary too is that the staff behind this movie claims to have worked their hardest on this movie. If this movie truly is their best (granted, you can only polish a turd s much), I'm frankly worried for the future of the show. I will of course give them the benefit of the doubt, but I sincerely hope they never again return to the world of Canterlot High and Equestria Girl and forever more let it slip away into obscurity limbo and pretend li it never existed, because as far as I'm concerned, the mere existence of it is hurtful to the show as a whole 5/10

I don't think I'll ever understand why they decided to have a movie take place in Canterlot High.

It just seems to wasteful. The idea of a former student of Celestia growing jealous and power hungry and seeking revenge against Twilight Sparkle is cool, why not do it in Equestria? They wouldn't have had to spend so much of the movie having Twilight re-meet her friends and bring them back together again, and could have instead devoted much more time towards an interesting and exciting story, building up Sunset Shimmer to her full power and making her a truly threatening villain like NMM, Discord, Chrysalis, and Sombra.

I feel much the same way, she's definitely not in the same league as the big four. For a distinctly lesser villain to be the arch antagonist of a two-hour movie is unforgivable. Especially since her primary archtype, an anti-Twilight Sparkle, was already being fulfilled quite nicely by Trixie.

I really feel like EqG didn't bring anything new to the mythos. It truly is just a meaningless detour, at least to me.

I swear, if Meghan was lieing to us, and brings Flash Sentry into S4 in any way… I think I'll be very upset.
