Pepsi MAX Pig refers to a photoshopped image of a dead necrotic pig with a hose running from its belly into a bottle of Pepsi MAX. Originally posted on an Egyptian blog in 2013, the image achieved virality as a non-sequitur reaction image on X / Twitter in 2023.

Origin

Prior to December 27th, 2013, user Toufik-b posted a photoshopped image of a Pepsi MAX bottle being connected with a hose to the belly of a dead pig to the Egyptian blog Maktooblog (original post no longer available, shown below). On December 27th, 2013, X^[1] / Twitter user @musabi_al made the earliest discovered repost of the image.

The image did not see use in memes until March 31st, 2023, when an unknown X user posted the image with the caption "why does studio ghibli food look so good" (shown below). On March 31st, Tumblr^[2] user chimpanzeedotcom reposted the image, with the post garnering over 5,000 likes and reblogs in 10 months. On April 5th, Instagam^[3] user hambubrger made another repost that achieved over 10,300 likes in a similar timeframe.

Spread

On September 4th, 2023, X^[4] user @cambropallas made a meme parodying "What Game Is This?" posts using the image. The post (shown below) gained over 110 reposts and 560 likes in four months. On September 25th, Instagram^[5] user greg.heffleys.burner.account made a repost that received over 3,400 likes in three months.

Following the post, more similar posts were made in the following months, with the meme peaking in popularity in late 2023. For example, on December 29th, 2023, X^[6] user @atlowaly made a post that received over 1,000 reposts and 3,400 likes in three weeks (shown below, left). On December 29th, X^[7] user @Sxmureye quoted the post, writing, "What does this even mean bro." The post gained over 8,500 reposts and 165,000 likes in three weeks (shown below, right).
