I can SORT of understand where he's coming from. The human mind has an easier time empathizing with the familiar, even if it isn't real. By placing a character he knows and loves in that situation, he's able to make a greater connection than with the real but completely unfamiliar people in the photo.

That said, this is way too sensitive a topic to be mixing with ponies.
