Robotnik and Sonic were both submissions by their R and D department to replace Alex Kidd as their mascot and signature character. Robotnik started out as a fat guy in PJ's. But Sonic won out and became a video game hero instead, leading the fat guy in Pj's to evolve into Robotnik. If Sonic didn't win that interoffice competition, there's a chance that Robotnik would have had a weird video game and the celebrity that came with it. Good think that didn't happen.
