Just wait for the Mushroom Historia

There's a very distant past fork which hinges on whether Pauline ditches Mario or not.

Breakup Timeline – heartbroken, Mario descends into the sewers as seen in the Mario Bros arcade game and eventually discovers the Mushroom Kingdom. Super Mario Bros begins.

Non-Breakup timeline – Years pass. Mario becomes a successful manufacturer and brings Pauline to a factory making little clockwork likenesses of him. Donkey Kong (Jr) kidnaps Pauline again, STILL salty about Mario's treatment of his father back during Donkey Kong II. March of the Minis begins.
