MindsEye is a single-player action-adventure thriller video game developed by the gaming studio Build A Rocket Boy. The game was released in June 2025, receiving generally negative reviews from critics and players, which sparked outrage and backlash regarding the lack of polish in the game's final product, as well as critics stating MindsEye had bad writing and flawed gameplay features. Memes referencing the game, with some calling it the worst game of the year, also spread online shortly after its release.

History

On August 23rd, 2022, the gaming studio Build a Rocket^[1] announced MindsEye, previously titled Everywhere, during Gamescom Opening Night Live.

On February 12th, 2025, PlayStation^[2] revealed gameplay of MindsEye, amassing more than 569,000 views and 12,000 likes in five months. The video (seen below) also explains that the game follows the story of "Jacob Diaz, a former soldier fitted with "The MindsEye," a mysterious neural implant that haunts him with fragmented memories of a covert mission that changed his life forever.

MindsEye was then officially released on June 10th, 2025.

Reception

MindsEye received largely negative reviews from critics and players after its launch in mid-June 2025. For instance, on June 13th, 2025, IGN^[3] gave it a score of 4 out of 10 for the game, writing that "its flashy graphics and cinematics can’t hide its distinct lack of substance." The video (seen below) amassed over 333,000 views and 5,700 likes in two days.

As of June 17th, 2025, MindsEye held a "Mostly Negative" rating on Steam^[6] and a 37/100 metascore and 2.5/10 user score on Metacritic.^[7]

Response From Developers

On June 10th, 2025, the MindsEye developers, Build A Rocket Boy, released a response to the performance issues with its game,^[9] stating:

Thank you kindly to all of you who joined us as pioneers on day one! We understand that the current minimum spec requirements are very high, but our engineering team are working around the clock to improve performance on mainstream hardware as well as consoles by integrating the performance improvements in Unreal Engine V5.6. We will provide patch 3 update timing, including these improvements, within the next 24 hours. In addition to the main campaign, we would also value your thoughts on Build.Mindseye.

Online Presence

Following the game's release on June 10th, 2025, numerous YouTubers began covering MindsEye and reporting on its issues, such as bugs and glitches.

For example, that same day, YouTuber^[8] SomeOrdinaryGamers uploaded a video on the game, titled "The Worst Game Of 2025 Just Dropped," receiving over 409,000 views, 14,000 likes and 2,300 comments in six days (shown below).

Also on June 10th, YouTuber NikTek uploaded a video, titled "MindsEye Launch is an Absolute Disaster," showcasing various bugs in the game, garnering over 933,000 views, 21,000 likes and 6,100 comments in six days (seen below).

On June 11th, 2025, X^[4] user @ethangach claimed that sponsored MindsEye streamer had trouble promoting the game to his audience. The clip (seen below) received roughly 782,000 views and 11,000 likes in five days.

On June 12th, 2025, TikTok^[5] user @hossfrr posted a video mocking the sponsored streamers promoting MindsEye, which garnered over 5 million plays and 354,000 likes in four days.
