For those who don't know about it, in the first game, Gnasty Gnorc stole all the gems from the dragons and used them to create an army with a special spell (we don't know what is the spell used during the game unfortunately).
When you beat one ennemy, he'll give you a coloured gem or a white gem (after taking a certain amount, you get a life) if you have already collected the gem from him.
So basically, you collect the "souls" of your ennemies.

Also :
- A red gem worth 1,
- A green gem worth 2,
- A blue gem worth 5,
- A gold gem worth 10,
- A purple gem worth 25.
Because it could be strange for a Zelda player who thinks that a green rupee worth 1 or a red rupee worth 20.
