I think she snapped, and tried to find a way to deal with her unresolved sexual tension towards Rose that has become displaced upon steven (she watches him sleep- often)

The bear, one of his preferred toys, may represent steven..who is also rose. Maybe the banana represents her envy of the male form that seduced rose? I mean…I doubt she has any serious knowledge of how human reproduction works.
