I think if there's any gem that Steven knows not to play around with, it's Jasper. He may ask if Peridot is hurt when she's trying to run away from them, but if Jasper just fell down a hole with no way out, I could see Steven letting that be that.
The right thing to do, though, would be hiring Onion to finish the job.
