If it had really been that he just backed up the toilet, wouldn't she have said, that Cody "got" poop everywhere? "Put" indicates intention. Now, I'll admit that people don't always use the most appropriate word in every situation. But then they go on to talk about how crazy and abnormal Cody is. If he just backed up the toilet, what's that all about?

In short, the excuse doesn't make any sense.
