Planking meme

Seems to come from the original game of "Lying Down Game" that is becoming popular in Australia. Someone should write a new meme covering it. I would do it but I suck at descriptions.

Some resources:

Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rObgXiQEV8g

Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/pages/Planking-Australia/147452668649160?sk=wall

News: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tRHnTFesv7c (TV news with some planking of there own at the end)

Sydney Morning Herald: http://www.smh.com.au/technology/technology-news/layabouts-plank-their-way-across-town-in-latest-net-craze-20110512-1ejun.html

Seems to be picked up by a major commercal radio station:

How to Plank: http://www.novafm.com.au/nova919/video_how-to-plank_110119

And finally Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Planking_

Thanks.

I think this is definitely going somewhere. While similar to the Lying Down Game, the main difference here is the idea of naming your "Plank" and constantly outdoing each other. These "Plankers" have their own set community.

This is definitely interesting.

The Lying Down Game also incorporated outdoing each other. Are you sure this isn't just another name for the same thing?

The Wikipedia page was created with <http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Talk:Planking_(fad)&action=history>one edit and one citation. Not very credible yet.

Okay this video was good:

It still seems like the Lying Down Game has caught on in Australia, and for whatever reason they're calling it "planking."

Some Guy just died in Brisbane while Planking, he fell of the balcony of his apartment building, PLanking has been getting allot of bad press in Australia.
http://news.ninemsn.com.au/national/8249285/man-dies-after-falling-from-brisbane-unit

Just added some information to the Wikipedia page.

I've added the following:

Planking gained popularity in Australia when David "Wolfman" Williams (NRL player) did this after a try during the Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles vs Newcastle Knights game on the 27th of March 2011. He went on to talk about it on Triple J and The Footy Show.

It's just ballooned from there. Apparently the Facebook ground was started by some guys in Gladstone, QLD. Guessing there were watching the NRL footy show or listening to Triple J.

When I first saw it across Facebook I thought it was Lying Down Game. Apart from Australia it doesn't appear to have spread to anywhere else, most likely because those countries that thoroughly embraced Lying Down Game or Playing Dead see it as just being a copycat or that Australia is 5 years late on a popular meme.

This definitely warrants an update to Lying Down Game if only to suggest that Australia has inadvertently renamed it for themselves.

Considering the origins of Lying Down Game stem from Facebook, it's surprising that the guys who started Planking Australia didn't take the time to look if there were any similar groups already existing on Facebook.

Btw I <3 Australia, I have lived here all my life, but in light of that it's fairly typical of us taking something and trying to turn it into our own. Though I'd much prefer to call it Lying Down Game as the backstory and history would be better.

Planking is not a meme, it never will be a meme, it is a copy of the lying down game taken on by drunkards and the bogan population. Im sorry but its just not meme worthy, sure heaps of people are doing it, but a meme is an original idea which is educed by the masses. As planking is not original, it is not worthy to be called a meme. Simply copying another meme and trying to outdo each other is just retarded

Planking is definitely significant. In the last few days it's become very popular within South Florida, where I live, and across the U.S. That being said, it should still be considered part of the Lying Down Game meme, seeing as it spawned from there. Or perhaps it should be classified as a sub-meme, seeing as planking is the form in which the Lying Down Game is becoming popular.

I posted this on the visual analysis but I wanted to post it here too. Couldn’t these just be combined the way trollface/coolface/problem was? I mean they are basically the same thing, just different rules. They could each have different sections in the same post. It's the same thing I'm about to do for a couple of pony sub-memes that involve the same character. Just a thought.

Biggest difference between the laying down game, and the planking game?

In planking you lie down as if you are dead, and in the laying down game, you jump off 5 story buildings in Australia.

This is just my opinion, but since Planking grew into such huge media hype, driving participation that much further, outgrowing the Lying Down Game and Playing Dead, I think it's time to break them out each into their own sub-meme entries.

Also because the daredevil aspect of Planking, it ought to be differentiated.
And I just realized that somewhere some asshole just heard about the The Lying Down Game and called it "planking for pussies."

Planking, Bro.

lol, did he say it with an Australian accent? As for the possible linkage between Lying Down Game and Planking, Paul Carran (the NZ guy being credited as the original planker) has said in news interviews that "lying down game" was the source of inspiration for planking:

Q: How did it start?

A: I got put on to a game called "the lying down game" by a friend in the United Kingdom. Me and a friend of mine, Justin Kemp, thought we would take it to the extreme and kick it off down our part of the world …

Which makes the hype behind the term "planking" even more interesting: if Lying Down Game (UK) and Planking (AU) are openly related phenomena after all and there is no language barrier between the hosts, why are there two English names for the same thing?

Personally, I would choose TLDG, largely because of my intense fear of everything above and below sea level. But Planking is more daring, and seems to depend largely on people jonesing for an adrenaline rush and/or something to prove and/or the admiration of some passerby, whereas TLDG is merely voluntary narcolepsy.

That being said, I would think Plankin' is the illest.
And lo, it shall be.

well i live in Australia personally i dont see a difference between planking and TLDG and i also have known about TLDG since 2006 so i was a little confused when i suddenly saw people doing it, but i prefer the term planking as it rolls off the tongue better then the lying down game

If the lying down game is planking for pussies, then planking must be the lying down game for stupid pricks. This is what happens when memes go mainstream: they start to suck.

"… And you always have to out-do each other."

I think the only person that "out-did" anyone was the guy that was Planking on a building and died. I know it was sad (And don't think I'm a troll) but if somebody dies while doing this that means that they beat everyone and they are better than them!

just thought i'd contribute by saying that the planking meme has definetly become significantly more mainstream than the lying down game in australia and is probably due to it being easier to use in coversation (e.g. saying "I planked" is much easier than saying "I played the lying down game") (us australians are lazy)

another random bit of info is that many buisnesses are outright prohibiting planking with many places (including the fast food restaurant which i work at which has introduced a policy saying that you will be fired on the spot if you plank either on the property or with the uniform on)

but yea, it is really just the lying down game for australia

They're all pretty much identical, although American plankers don't really try to outdo each other.
It must be getting pretty crazy down under if they're banning it. Thanks for the tip, holydevel.

FYI, it's spread to New Zealand.
