cadbortion and loss edit of Game Of Thrones scene where the dragon gets speared with ice javlin

About

Loss, also known as CADbortion, Loss.jpg and | || || |_, refers to an iconic cartoon strip from the video game-themed webcomic series Ctrl+Alt+Del[1] in which the female lead suffers a miscarriage. The dramatic tonal shift for the series was unexpected, and for many readers, unsuccessful, leading to the strip being widely mocked online. In the decade since its release, it became the subject of widespread mockery among its readers, and has since been widely parodied in minimalist interpretations of the strip's four panels, represented as "| || || |_".

Origin

On June 2nd, 2008, Buckley posted a strip titled "Loss,"[2] in which the female lead Lilah suffers a miscarriage. The strip marked a significant change in tone from the usually comedic comic, and the poorly-executed drama of the comic spurred Ctrl+Alt+Del's significant anti-fandom to mockery.

cadbortion loss edits meme original that sparked the greatest meme ever

Spread

After the strip was posted, many notable webcomics began parodying the comic and its final panel in particular, including HijiNKS Ensue,[3] Cyanide and Happiness,[4] Bigger then Cheeses,[5] EEGRA hilarity comics,[6][7] Fanboys,[8] and Slackerz.[9] Other notable internet persona to mock the comic included as Ben 'Yahtzee' Croshaw of Zero Punctuation[10] and Shmorky from Something Awful's Flash Tub.[11]

On 4chan, the /v/ board became overrun with parodies to such an extent that moderators began banning people who opened new "Loss" threads. Something Awful users were particularly unkind to the comic, creating mock threads[12][13] (one of which is over 350 pages long), two entire (now closed) wikis and an interactive graph of the comic.[14] Someone went to the extent of making a random CAD comic generator,[15] subtly mocking that even disjointed, mismatched panels of the comic are still funnier than the originals.

El Santo[16] (the webcomic overlook), The Bad Webcomic Wiki[17] and others have also mentioned the infamous comic in negative reviews of the webcomic as well. On July 25th, 2009, YouTuber KennylovesArin uploaded a musical tribute based on the comic accompanied by friends Skraggy and Arin (popular animator known as Egoraptor), with lyrical references to the miscarriage strip.

Alternative/Minimalist Interpretations

Alongside the outright mockery of the strip, a trend arose on /v/ which involved taking the Loss strip and representing it in different ways. Usually, these would attempt to be minimalistic, portraying the characters as lines, dots, or just having four empty panels.

Edits such as these continued to spread throughout the internet over the following decade. The propagation of these parodies became ubiquitous to the point that people were unsure if any four-panel image they saw online was in fact a "Loss" parody. This led the question "Is This Loss?" to become a meme itself.

Is this loss.jpg? I. し3 pg?

Legacy

The comic's long life as a meme has led multiple news organizations to publish articles devoted to the meme. In 2015, Select All[17] interviewed Buckley about the comic's impact. In the interview, Buckley admitted that he found the meme at times frustrating as he'd misjudged his audience's potential response to the strip at the time of publishing, and at other times he admitted he found the memes "quite amusing." KnowYourMeme published an article about Loss in 2017 calling it "The Internet's Greatest Meme."[18]

When the strip's publication had its ten-year anniversary on June 2nd, 2018, Buckley briefly changed the page to show a parody of his own creation which shows the comic's main character breaking the fourth wall (shown below).

Multiple publications, including Polygon[19] and io9[20] published articles about the change while also discussing the strip's impact.

today (July third) is the anniversary of the infamous "loss" strip.
and yet… there is no CAD entry ! not even in the deadpool.

i wrote a little something, but this is just scratching the surfer.
i it's late where i live and i haven even gotten to the animated series.

anyway… i need some help here (as usual.)
if someone could clean this up… my spelling ain't s'good and my grammar and punctuation are even worse.
also, help me figure out what is and isn't relevant to this article.
i have lots more to add but i don't know if info about Tim himself is relevant. (i don't want this to become another Buckley bash festival,Internet's got more then enough of those already.)
and finally… i don't think i got this link thing down quit yet….

i have an entire heap of links i could add, here but i need to look them up and i'm tired.
ill try to get around to it in the morning.
    anyway,HELP PLZ.

Oh yeah, this is definitely a meme. Couple of problems with this page though. First of, even though you've obviously put a lot of effort into it, it's kinda messy. But the biggest problem?
No images of any kind. I mean, what?!

    0
  • Mr Bumhole #1 Fan Of Osaka - 12 years ago

A lot of these images have nothing to with the meme. They're just anti Ctrl Alt Del images. :/ Don't just add every anti Ctrl Alt Del art, we'd have a agllery bigger thant the freakin' ponie's.

  • oddguy - 12 years ago

i don't think the meme is just the abortion…
i thinks it's the whole "make fun of CAD" thing.
i mean, there are A LOT of things wrong with the comic and with buckley.
    not just the "loss" strip.
also,i know it's a mess right now… i had to go to work… in fact i'm AT WORK RIGHT NOW ! (employe of the year here i come !) ill try to fix it up a bit when i have a day off tomorow.

Hmm perhaps the original comic should be added to the article? At first I actually though the awesome face edit in the thumbnail was the original due to the lack of a original being in the actuall article.

  • oddguy - 12 years ago

tried to edit it a bit… add more info… don't know what's relevant and what isn't.

Yeah, ALOT of work needs to go to this. There are TONS of spelling and gramatical error, and the description of this mean needs to be re-written altogether. It's not very journalistic to simplic state that the comic was "not funny, to wordy, derivative, etc." Those are your opinions. If you think that is what most people think of the comic, then describe it as such.

    0
  • Supersosko - 12 years ago

I gave the comic a chance and it was terrible. The writing is atrocious, the changes in tone are almost as subtle as Micheal Bay, and most of it is just cruel and unfunny. I'm surprised I haven't seen more of this stuff online. +1 confirm

    0
  • oddguy - 12 years ago

well, the spell checker isn't showing me any spelling errors…
i know my grammer isn't too good.
but i didn't say i thought the comic was bad,i said those were the complaints voiced about it.

idk… the "word word word" i admit is pointless, and i already deleted the "ham hand Buckley".
not notable enough, only goons do that.
but i think there is more to the meme then just "loss".
there is an entire spectrum of things wrong with the comic and with Buckley himself that people like to make fun of.
"loss" is just the most prominent example.

if i wrote everything relevant to this subject this would be the longest article on kym.
i bet i could think of at least 50 bad thing that have been said about B^Uckley and the comic right off the top of my head.

Okay, so I'm looking in the comments below and I've noticed that everyone's saying "oh miscarriage isn't funny. +1 deadpool". Well, miscarriage may not be funny, but a meme isn't deadpooled just because you don't agree with it, that's just stupid and selfish. If everything worked that way, everyone would find fault with some meme and try to bitch it away. A meme is deadpooled for, well, not being a meme. And this right here seems to have achieved meme status, even if it is kinda unfunny. :/

    +1
  • Mr Bumhole #1 Fan Of Osaka - 12 years ago

What Junia said. A thousand times what Junia said. It doesn't matte rif you personally don't like it, look at the evidence above. It's a meme. And besides, it's not humour about a miscarriage. It's humour about a badly made comic strip involving a miscarriage.

    -1
  • howlinmadmurdoch - 12 years ago

READ THE WHOLE DAMN ARTICLE BEFORE YOU RATE. "Miscarriges aren't funny". Yeah, they're not. This meme isn't about miscarriges. It's about making fun of a bad comic writer. Got that?

    0
  • Asriel Dreemurr - 12 years ago

I have a mixed feeling on the rating. being a horrible comic writing doesn't mean you're a meme but then again alot of parodies of that Miscarriage comic have been made, my personal favorite one is the one where its Weegee. Though after reading the comments, oh for god's sake shut up about the miscarriage "+1 DEADPOOL BECUZ MISCARRIAGES AREN'T FUNNY" like what one fellow said its about the writer not that exact comic, and secondly, its the internet even if you have the most saddest story known to man we'll still laugh about it and possibly turn it into a meme. Like 9/11 Joke, they're just Plane wrong.

No one is saying ACTUAL miscarriages are amusing, but a badly done miscarriage inserted into a shitty two gamers on a couch comic for drama (written by an egotistical racist pedophile douchemuffin) IS amusing. So the Cuntrl-Alt-Del webcomic has finished, with yet another case of drama attached. Apparently though the "Brand" is still going to continue!

To try and continue a brand after the main product that wasn't good anyway is finished…

This page has more down voted or blocked comments than any other page I've been on in my years of visiting KYM. This comic's sheer existance is enough to cause violent arguements. Hell I'm pretty sure that freaking SONICHU causes fewer arguements and edit wars than this thing.

So…sort of against my better judgment, I looked up the uploads of the animated series with smart-ass annotations (THANK GOD). Holy shit, Ctrl+Alt+Del is fucking trash. I've heard people say it but now, I've confirmed it. And I cannot stop watching, even when I pause and groan at how much of a fucking asshole our main lead is when all he wants to do is play video games.

Okay, I love playing video games a lot, but I have a job because that's not what my entire life revolves around. Maybe I wish it could, but in a way where it's not "LOL I DON'T WANT TO GO TO WORK BECUZ IT'S NOT VIDEO GAMES".

Figuratively, fuck Tim Buckley and I don't know who the hell saw the webcomic and thought it had potential.

Well, time to make it trend, apologies for that, but it's been a while since I've been thinking of this. This meme is art – and I'm not even kidding. A single bad webcomic spawned so much variations that I have no option but to consider that it's art in the same sense Andy Warhol meant when he painted soup cans and in the sense there is no author, truly a tribute to the anonimity of the internet culture.

      Well you go from this

To above. Its ok I use to read it when I was 15 but the serious sub plots are so out of place compared to the rest of the comic. Having a comic about video game jokes having a miscarriage side plot was just fucking weird.

(Spoilers I guess) The comic ends with some type of robot invasion and the main character sacrifices himself or some shit and the entire thing is played super seriously with no jokes, its like what? What happened?

And then it will whip lash back to this

I looked at some of the comics before, and it's less the main character sacrificing himself and more of one of the freedom fighters (or something) killing his future self to stop him from going back to his time in one piece as a means to save the future or some shit.

I'm reminded of a book I was shown in fourth grade in which archaeologists found remains of modern society and managed to severely misinterpret almost everything they found (believing, for instance, that a toilet seat was a type of headdress). Perhaps in the distant future, historians will view Loss as the last remains of some long-forgotten religion.

I doubt that the masses would harp on a meme about miscarriage (though they'll probably try to ban it like Pepe after the uneducated started seeing it as Nazi propaganda).

I don't think loss can become truly mainstream due to how it actually takes a bit of thinking and cleverness to determine if something is actually a loss injoke, despite loss edits being braindead most of the time; AKA, it seems like a meme that takes more wit to recognize than create.

I doubt most people would understand why:

    • A art - 4 years ago

      1. Memes do not have to be funny. Like, the definition of a meme includes nothing about comedy. Just that it is easily spread culture. 2. What comedy can be derived from it comes from the author of the comic's over-the-top defensiveness to the deserved backlash he got for it. In other words, the "funny" here is in pointing at an author that took their work waaaay too seriously and could not take deserved and fair criticism and saying "look at this idiot over here, guys!"

Basically, it is a very similar issue to the Harry Potter memes of recent times: an author blatantly trying to court controversy and having it blow up in their face.

the fact i read this comment 4 days ago and now a webcomic along the lines of "this smart move, that stupid move" has a friend irl convinced i made the comic because it kinda sorta resembled the art styles i went for in college with a similar disagreement lines up perfectly to say : i am sorry universe, i laughed at the wrong thing.

loss is kinda like amogus in that it's so simple and smol that you can hide it basically anywhere and there's endless possibilities. it might as well never die, people are still posting new ones in a discord server i'm in.
(also most recent reply is now 20 days old. the universe made it line up into a 420 joke now lmao)

it drives me crazy that this 4 panel is so close to working as its own Loss derivative and no one has mentioned that
