“Cala boca Galvão” means “Shut up Galvão” in Portuguese. The phrase became an international trending topic after Galvão Bueno’s remarkable comments about the bands featured in the opening ceremony of the 2010 World Cup (June 11th) in South Africa.

Origins

Carlos Eduardo dos Santos Galvão Bueno, or Galvão Bueno is a well known and notorious sportscaster in Brazil. During the opening ceremony of the 2010 World Cup, Galvão Bueno was criticized on Twitter through the Tweet “Cala Boca Galvão.” The phrase means Shut Up Galvão. The phrase was retweeted seriously and non-serious as well. The phrase itself started to trend on Twitter and the non-Portuguese speaking Twitter world took notice.

Many non-Portuguese speaking Twitterers noticed the message was trending. Several decided to keep the phrase alive and said that “Cala Boca Galvão” was part of a campaign to save the Galvão bird (which is not a real bird). A Twitter campaign was launched claiming that if the phrase “Cala Boca Galvão” was Tweeted, then ten cents would be donated to save the bird. A YouTube video was launched to aid the spread of the hoax.

Another false story created on the topic was that “Cala boca Galvão” was a new single by Lady Gaga.

Cala boca Galvão even found its way into a TED talk. Ethan Zuckerman basically explains the whole meme in the first 3 minutes:

“cala boca Galvão” is not a new phrase to us, Brazilians. Its been more than 16 years that no one can stand Galvão Bueno, still, He is the official from the biggest brazilian Tv channel. This year we only got twitter on our side. As thousands of Brazilian yelled CALA BOCA GALVÃO, we reached worlds TT, and everyone started asking “whats cala boca galvão” then the video was made.

Rede Globo used the Video as the real cause of Cala Boca Galvão, trying to make things look better for Galvão Bueno, but He just can’t shut up.

This is so great! one of the best brazilian memes (along with Tenso), because it’s worldwide, not just a local thing.
We need parts of that NY times page added to this article.
Some graphs would also be nice.

well, I’m not really sure, but I read in a magazine (“Veja”) which is one of the most important ones in Brazil, that with each tweet, you would be helping with 0.10 dollars, and not 1 US$… I’m not pretty sure, but you should try to discover

Well, what’s happening is that brazillians started tweeting ‘Cala Boca Galvão’, and foreigners got confused about it. Brazillians decided to joke that it means “Save Galvao”, Galvao being a rare bird. A youtube video was made, by brazillians, using the name of environmental entities from the government, to make it seem legit.

People believed it and started tweeting #CALABOCAGALVAO, thinking they were saving a rare animal. Meanwhile, brazillians ROFL :D

Some people also thought it was a new Lady Gaga Single, and there’s speculation about it.

I’ve also heard that a big newspaper from the USA made an article about Cala Boca Galvão, thinking it was the environmental campaign, but haven’t foud it yet.
