Why Is Homeland Security Beefing With An NBA Twitter Account? The 'DHS vs. Hoodgenius' Drama Explained

DHS vs. Hoodgenius controversy explained.

The official Twitter / X account for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has spent the better half of the year making tweets that double up as recruitment posters for ICE and warnings to those threatening harm to ICE officers.

One such post sparked a controversy last week after many internet users accused the folks at DHS of spreading misinformation, saying that an anti-ICE video featuring TikToker @Floridanamedjit they shared was fake.

While the veracity of the TikTok video is up for debate, most people were caught off guard by the official @DHSgov taking the time of day to publicly beef with an NBA-themed troll page named @hoodg3nius, one of many to dogpile on the official government account.

So, what's the backstory behind Homeland Security vs. Hoodgenius? Here's the scoop.

Who is @Floridanamedjit, and Why Are People Accusing DHS Of Making An 'AI Video' Framing Him?

On October 17th, 2025, the official Homeland Security account (@DHSgov) reposted a TikTok showing a group of young Black men standing in a field with text that read, "ICE we're on the way. Word on the streets the cartel put a $50K bounty on y'all."

The DHS Twitter account's caption on the clip was, "FAFO. If you threaten or lay hands on our law enforcement officers we will hunt you down," and the post gathered over 37 million views and 130,000 likes in a week.

But the TikTok account watermarked in the DHS post had either been deleted or renamed, with the TikToker pictured in the clip posting a reply under the username @mr.floridajhit, telling his viewers he did not create the threatening anti-ICE caption in the video.

@mr.floridajhit To clear that out once again I did not post that video! #fyp #viral #trends #trending #trendingvideo #viralvideo #makethisgoviral #goviral ♬ Nocturne (Chopin) calm piano solo – もつ

Other internet users went a step further and accused the DHS of knowingly posting an AI-generated clip to implicate the TikToker, although there appears to be no reason to believe that the clip was manipulated using AI technology.

X user @tonydechino was one of them, posting a screenshot on October 17th claiming, "Al finna have black people at crime scenes they were never at. Watch," and gathering over 200,000 likes in five days.

Who Is 'HoodGenius' And Why Is The Official Department of Homeland Security Account Replying To Their Tweets?

Usually, the X account @HoodG3nius operates as an NBA-adjacent meme and commentary account, posting basketball takes, jokes and viral GIFs.

But in October 2025, the page became one of several people to accuse the Department of Homeland Security of knowingly posting misinformation, writing, "Spreading misinformation especially as ‘the department of homeland security’ should cause for the abolishment of that said department," and gathering over 60,000 likes in five days.

Instead of ignoring the tweet and focusing on more credible critics, the official DHS account doubled down publicly, replying in all caps, "WE HAVE THE RECEIPTS. This young man posted violent threats of murder against our law enforcement… He then deleted it when he was called out… The willful ignorance and intentional blindness by leading Democrats to the massive increase in violent rhetoric against our agents due to their actions is both disgusting and disappointing."

HoodGenius kept baiting. On October 19th, the account posted an IShowSpeed GIF and wrote, "I just realized the DHS called me a 'leading democrat' btw 😭😭😭," in a tweet that reached millions of viewers.

The DHS account then appeared to backpedal or lean into the joke a bit by posting an attempt at banter, replying to @HoodG3nius with, "We hear you know ball" a few days later.

But the damage was seemingly done. The internet was already fixated on the fact that an official Homeland Security account had seemingly been ragebaited by the NBA troll page @HoodG3nius.

How Did Internet Users React to the Official Homeland Security Account Getting Rage-baited by HoodGenius?

Many people were flabbergasted when they realized that Homeland Security was publicly beefing with a meme page, writing, "the government is responding to nba trolls ok," and "DHS responding to hoodgenius and I'm supposed to believe we're not in the US century of humiliation."

On October 21st, X user @mvp_wizz summarized the state of things in a viral post that read, "went from taking down Osama Bin Laden to replying to 'hoodgenius' on Twitter," gathering over 100,000 likes in two days.

On Reddit, Redditor u/Jjokes11 posted a Man vs. Giant meme titled "P-ssing off the government legally is so fun," which amassed 15,000 upvotes and 240 comments before moderators removed it.

Other Twitter users couldn't stop thinking about how funny @HoodG3nius's arc was, with X user @cclairemcd editing his avatar onto a presidential podium and noting the official Democratic Party account had started following the meme page too.
