About

Diggy Diggy Hole refers to a song originating from a 2011 Yogscast YouTube video in which Lewis and Simon are digging while playing Minecraft, inspiring Simon to sing a song about being a dwarf digging a hole. The song has inspired numerous remixes and videos referencing it, as well as the bait-and-switch format You Just Got Diggy Diggy Hole'd, and a number of memes, including image macros.

Origin

On February 3rd, 2011, YouTubers[1] Yogscast Simon and Lewis posted a video titled, "Minecraft – 'Shadow of Israphel' Part 8: Diggy Diggy Hole," the eighth part of their Minecraft Let's Play series. At around 10 minutes in, Lewis asks Simon to sing a song about being a dwarf digging a hole. At timestamp 10:07 in the video, Simon sings the song in a "dwarvish accent" (shown below). The video gained over 4 million views in 10 years.

The song became extremely popular among Yogscast fans, resulting in a number of edits and remixes that year. For example, on March 29th, 2011, YouTuber[2] Ceeraanoo posted an original animation and remix of the song, garnering over 4.6 million views in 10 years and representing one of the earliest known Diggy Diggy Hole edits (shown below).



On May 4th, the video game Dwarfs!?, about running a colony of dwarves, was released on Steam. The game includes a reference to "Diggy Diggy Hole," as well as voice acting by Yogscast Simon as a tribute to the meme (shown below).



On August 15th, Yogscast uploaded a fan-made remix of the song including an original music video to their YouTube[3] channel, garnering over 23 million views in 10 years (shown below).



That video was the most popular version of the song up until July 11, 2014, when Yogscast uploaded an brand-new original song based around the phrase (shown below). This eventually became the definitive version of the meme overall, gaining 65 million views in 9 years.



The song inspired a number of other popular remixes and animations over the course of the next 10 years, also resulting in numerous memes. Although its popularity peaked around 2014, the song has continued to inspire viral videos and memes (examples from 2019 shown below, each with over 1 million views).



On June 6th, 2019, metal band WIND ROSE posted a music video for their cover of "Diggy Diggy Hole," garnering over 24.5 million views in two years (shown below).



On December 28th, 2020, Redditor u/MellowThePotato posted an image macro referencing the song to /r/memes,[4] garnering over 19,000 upvotes in five months (shown below, left). On February 2nd, 2021, Redditor u/Sunfenmu posted another meme referencing the song to /r/hololive,[5] garnering over 1,800 upvotes in three months (shown below, right).
