About

Griffith, also known as Femto, is a character from the manga and anime series Berserk created by artist Kentaro Miura. Despite being the main antagonist of the series, Griffith is characterized as being extraordinarily handsome and charming. He acts as a friend to protagonist Guts before betraying him to transform himself into the powerful "Femto." Memes about Griffith generally revolve around his beautiful appearance and his evil nature, with the phrase "Griffith did nothing wrong" appearing as an offshoot of the Hitler Did Nothing Wrong meme. The character is also prevalent in various fan art depictions around the web.

Origin

Griffith first appears in Chapter L0 of the "Golden Age Arc" in Berserk and is shown disarming and defeating Guts. He defeats Guts again in a sparring match and goes on to enlist him to join his mercenary group Band of the Hawk.^[1]

Some early discussions about Griffith took place on the 4chan anime board /a/, with an anonymous user posting a panel from a Berserk prototype comic on March 13th, 2008, saying "Lol, Griffith was originally a loli" (seen below, left).^[2] Another anonymous user posted a Griffith panel on December 14th, 2008,^[3] saying, "Have you forgiven Griffith today?" (seen below, right).

Spread

On November 29th, 2012, DeviantArt^[4] user kata-009 posted a comic featuring an injured Griffith, gathering over 36,000 views in over 10 years (seen below, left). On February 7th, 2014, Know Your Meme user MScratch uploaded a meme in which Griffith is shown wearing glasses and saying, "I came here to laugh at you." The image has gathered over 2,000 views in over nine years (seen below, right).^[5]

Griffith Holding Up Behelit / Griffith Did Nothing Wrong

A prominent meme featuring Griffith is a scene from the 1997 anime in which he holds up his behelit and smiles. The behelit is typically photoshopped with different items, as seen in a December 6th, 2020, post by Redditor^[6] /u/sunbatheindoors, gathering over 1,000 upvotes in over two years (seen below, left). Another popular Griffith meme is the phrase "Griffith did nothing wrong." A Facebook^[7] page with the catchphrase emerged in early 2016 and posted a meme in defense of Griffith on May 26th, 2016 (seen below, right).
