About

Hot Skitty on Wailord Action, sometimes abbreviated to HSOWA, is a joke among Pokemon fans relating to the fact that the Pokemon Skitty and Wailord, despite being very different in size, appearance, and elemental type, can breed.

In the Pokemon series, there is a breeding segment in which two pokemon of opposite genders can breed "eggs" which the player hatches into baby Pokemon. The ability for two Pokemon to breed is based on whether or not the two Pokemon are in the same breeding "group".

One of the more humorous aspects of this feature is the strange breeding combinations that can happen, the most famous and demonstrative being Skitty and Wailord. While Skitty is a small, catlike Pokemon, Wailord is, as the name would indicate, modeled after a whale, and as such is the largest non-legendary Pokemon in the series. Despite these differences, they are both in the Field breeding group and are, ironically, able to breed.

Origin and Spread

The meme began as a joke on the GameFAQs forums, where the topic was brought up. A user going by the name of "Endgame" replied to the topic with the phrase, and it spread from there.[1] An Urban Dictionary entry[2] appeared in 2009. In 2010, a TV Tropes entry[3] was created, using the phrase as the title of a trope describing strange sex between very different creatures.

Google Search Interest shows interest in the term initially spiking in 2009, the year of the phrase's origin.
