Ash Pedreiro, also known as "Dat Ash", is an advice animal image macro featuring an alternate universe artwork of Pokémon trainer Ash Ketchum and lewd puns that are derived from the character names of Pokémon creatures.
Origin
The advice animal drawing was inspired by a photo from the website myfacewhen.com.[1] The picture has been used as a reaction face on the Wiremod[2] forums as far back as December 2nd, 2010. The earliest known instance of the Ash Pedreiro ("brick layer" in Portuguese) advice animal was posted on the Portuguese website Cao Ninja on February 2nd, 2011.
According to Desciclopedia[3], "pedreiro" is a slang term used to label Brazilian construction workers who say cheesy pick-up lines to women who walk past work sites, similar to the American "construction catcall" trope.[13]
Spread
The series continued to spread on various Portuguese websites including A Net Em Chock[17], Zumineitor[16] and Motrollora.[18] On May 1st, 2011, the first "Dat Ash" image macro was posted to the Memebase[8] frontpage with the caption "I just want to give you a little squirtle" (shown left). The Ash Pedreiro Quickmeme[4] page was created on May 4th, with the first submission featuring the caption "Ay gurl ay / how's mah muk taste in yo meowth?" The instance (shown right) was posted to the /r/AdviceAnimals[15] subreddit the same day and received 199 up votes prior to being archived.
"Best of" compilations have been posted to Internet humor sites BuzzFeed[19] and Smosh.[20] The meme has since spread to Tumblr[10], deviantArt[21] and FunnyJunk.[22] A Memegenerator[5] page has 4,000 submissions, the Quickmeme page has 874 submissions and a Facebook[6] page has accumulated 5,418 likes as of March 2nd, 2012.
