I'm Straight, I'm Gay Survey refers to a snowclone popular on Twitter in which a person uses emoji resembling fill-in-the-blank circles to recreate a survey wherein the options are "I'm straight / I'm gay / I'm X," with the third option generally being a lyric from a song that is "checked off." The meme resembles the I'm a Man / Woman Looking For snowclone, which spread on Twitter around the same time.

Origin

The snowclone began spreading in August of 2017. The earliest variations appeared on August 20th, with the most popular being a tweet from @soberliability^[1] that quoted lyrics from the song "Green Light" by Lorde, gaining over 130 retweets and 340.^[1]

Spread

The meme saw some use over the course of the following months, but did not start becoming popular until May of 2018. On May 18th, Twitter user @mixofeden made a tweet quoting the song "Black Dress" by K-Pop artist CLC, gaining over 2,000 retweets and 3,300 likes (shown below).

More popular variations began appearing over the course of the next few days, generally using song lyrics as the punchline. Some popular examples include a tweet by @emma_cellist which quoted "National Anthem" by Lana Del Rey that gained over 1,300 retweets and 2,800 likes (shown below, left). User @hasharakl did the joke with Rick Astley's "Never Gonna Give You Up", gaining over 2,600 retweets and 7,600 likes (shown below, right).

Other Twitter users took the snowclone in a more absurd direction. Author Darcie Wilder made a joke regarding a recent wave of social media companies updating their privacy policies and gained over 1,100 retweets and 5,500 likes (shown below, left). User @XavierFiles made an X-Men joke that gained over 1,300 retweets and 3,500 likes (shown below, right). The May spread of the jokes was covered by Twitter Moments.^[2]
