Link & Zelda Confusion refers to mixing up Link, the protagonist of the Legend of Zelda series, and Princess Zelda for whom the series is named after. The blunder is often attributed to the series not being named after the protagonist unlike other franchises such as Super Mario or Sonic the Hedgehog.
A usually intentional method of trolling involves asking the question “What if Zelda was a girl” usually partnered with a rule 63 of Link. The question usually results in an angry response to the question-asker in a similar manner to Gannon banning
Derivative: “What if X was a girl?”
The confusing of genders for some characters is not limited to just Princess Zelda, with other gender ambiguous characters such as Samus Aran from the Metroid series not instantly being able to have her gender defined by someone who is uninformed.
