My Immortal / The Worst Fanfiction Ever

My Immortal, is a fanfiction that became infamous for being, what many have called, “the worst fanfiction ever written”. It contains a large number of spelling and grammatical errors and sudden unexplained sex scenes. Many of the titles for her chapters were inspired by the bands My Chemical Romance and Evanescence. The story has been the subject of several parodies and dramatic readings.

Origin

In 2006, a fanfiction.net user named Tara Gillesbie (username “XXXbloodyrists666XXX”) posted the first installment of the My Immortal story to the site. The Harry Potter based fanfiction features a female protagonist named “Ebony Dark’ness Dementia Raven Way”. It’s plot was generally considered absurd, and after an swarm of trolls caused a fair amount of drama, fanfiction.net staff members removed it from the site.

Suspected Trolling

Many refused to accept My Immortal as a serious work, and believed Tara was blatantly trolling. The large number of spelling errors appeared to be intentional to some, and it used many cliches of poorly written fanfiction.

A fanfiction.net user “TheBatman” wrote a confession claiming that he co-wrote the story. The confession has since been deleted, but a transcript has been posted online.^[1]

Author Notes

Whenever Tara posted a new chapter, she would preface with an author’s note to tell the “preps” and “posers” to stop flaming her work, often prompting to refuse to post the next part unless she received positive reviews.

Hacked

On November 21st, Tara’s account was hacked by another author and proceeded to end the story herself. The hacker posted her own ending, Chapter 39, and was kind enough to post Tara’s real Chapter 39 for all to laugh at. Tara managed to get her account back and continued the story up to Chapter 44, when Tara reportedly left to go on vacation in England and never released any further updates. Her last update to My Immortal was on July 5th, 2007.
