Merula Snyde is a witch introduced in the Harry Potter mobile game Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery. Following the game's release in late April 2018, Snyde gained a fan following within various communities online.

Origin

On April 25th, 2018, the role-playing video game Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery was released for iPhone and Android devices. In the game, the character Merula Snyde is introduced as a witch sorted in House Slytherin, who serves as a rival to the player.

Spread

On May 1st, Twitter user @loverclvb^[2] tweeted about her frustration with Snyde in the game (shown below).

On May 6th, a thread with the greentext "tfw you can't date merula snyde" was submitted to the /v/ (video games) board on 4chan (shown below). Prior to being archived on Yuki.la,^[6] the thread garnered more than 520 replies.

On May 10th, Instagram user @kimbasprite^[3] posted photographs of herself cosplaying the character (shown below).

On May 11th, an anonymous 4chan user submitted a "Merula Snyde thread" to the /v/ board, which received more than 625 replies prior to being archived on Fireden^[5] (shown below).

That day, another 4chan user replied to a thread about the game and speculated that 4chan users appreciated the character because she is a "loner who users sarcasm" to distance herself (shown below).^[7] On May 15th, a screenshot of the post was submitted by Redditor sangbum60090 in a post titled "Why 4chan's /v/ board loves Merula" on /r/HPHogwartsMystery.^[8]

As of May 21st, 2018, there are over 20 fanfictions tagged with "merula snyde" on the database Archive of Our Own.^[4]
