About
Virgin-Killing Sweater, also known as Sweater That Kills Virgins (Japanese: 童貞を殺すセーター, Doutei wo Korosu Sētā) and That Sweater (Japanese: 例のセーター, Rei no Sētā or あのセーター, Ano Sētā), are nicknames given to a halter neck sweater with a seductively large open back. In a similar vein to the Keyhole Turtleneck, the sweater became a trending topic among Japanese Twitter users in late January 2017.
Origin
According to the Pixiv Encyclopedia[1], the sweater was originally nicknamed "Virgin-Killing Sweater," based off the name "Clothes That Kill Virgins", in a tweet by @Magane4989 on January 25th, 2017 (shown below).[2] The tweet featured pictures of blue and black halter neck sweaters from the otaku costume shop Seventy-Three on the Chinese online shopping website Taobao.[3] Within four days, the tweet gained over 67,000 likes and 56,000 retweets.

The Virgin-Killing Sweater
Precursor
In June 2016, a similar open back sweater nicknamed "Sukebe Knit" (スケベニット, lit. "Erotic Knit") was tweeted by Japanese cosplayer Noraneko (のらねこ).[4][5] Although the name didn't receive much attention, amateur illustrators posted dozens of illustrations to Pixiv[6] and Twitter.[7]
Spread
Shortly after @Magane4989's sweater was tweet, other Twitter users began circulating photographs of the women's top.[8] That weekend, over 300 illustrations of the sweater were uploaded to Pixiv[9] and Nico Nico Seiga.[10] Additionally, many of the artworks were subsequently reblogged on Tumblr.[11] In the coming days, several news sites published articles about the online reaction to the sweater, including the Japanese sites ITmedia[12] and NariNari[13] and the English language site The Sun.[14]
Kano Sisters' Participation
On January 28th, 2017, Japanese celebrities Kyoko and Mika Kano, known collectively as Kano Sisters,[15] published a blog post of Mika wearing the open back dress.[16] The sisters also revealed they had worn similar outfits previously, referring to it as a "Buttock Cleavage Dress that Even Angels Get Stunned". This participation of the celebs from the outside of otaku community made headlines on several gossip sites.[17][18][19]
