High school is the fucking worst.

Like, you know that "five paragraph" model for how essays are supposed to work that they teach to basically everyone? Total bullshit. In real essay writing, you have as many or as few paragraphs as you need to get your point across.

This got really annoying back when I was a TA to a first-year English course. The essays would come back in and you'd have people writing two page paragraphs just so they can fit the model, since nobody told them that the way they were taught the year before is actually complete bullshit.

A surprisingly large part of teaching people to write at a university level involves just un-teaching them all the stuff they learned in high school.

Latin isn't a dead language. It's used in scientific and medical terminologies all the time. It also teaches you how to know or guess the correct definition of a "big word".
