About
The Grandma McFlurry is a promotional dessert from McDonald's released in May 2024. The item is a cup of vanilla soft-serve ice cream mixed with butterscotch-flavored syrup and crunchy candy pieces, intended to resemble candies one might find in a stereotypical grandma's purse, such as butterscotch. Upon its announcement and release, the item's humorous-sounding name led to jokes and memes on social media about its contents and effects, as well as discussions, reviews and media coverage.
History
On May 16th, 2024, McDonald's announced its "Grandma McFlurry" promotional item. The dessert is a cup of vanilla ice cream with syrup and crunchy candy.[1] That same day, the fast-food chain also uploaded a commercial for the product to its YouTube channel, receiving over 30,000 views in a week (seen below).
On May 17th, Dexerto[2] tweeted about the promotion, gaining over 2,100 retweets and 28,000 likes in five days (shown below). The item was officially released in stores on May 21st.
Online Presence
The release of the Grandma McFlurry led to jokes about the concept on social media, many of which had to do with the idea that McDonald's had killed actual grandmothers to make the treat. For example, on May 18th, 2024, Twitter / X user @openeyes1031[4] posted a joke that gained 13 likes in three days (shown below, left).
On May 22nd, Twitter user @shepgoesblep[3] made the joke and received over 180 likes in one day (shown below, right).
On May 20th, Redditor IchthyoSapienCaul posted a Disappointed Black Guy meme about the treat to /r/memes,[5] gaining 13 upvotes in three days. On the 22nd, Redditor midvalegifted posted a similar joke to /r/funny,[6] gaining over 40 likes in one day (shown below, right).
On May 22nd, 2024, YouTuber TheReportOfTheWeek / Reviewbrah uploaded a review of the dessert to his channel, receiving over 73,000 views, 5,500 likes and 1,000 comments in 24 hours (seen below). Many other YouTubers also posted reviews of the Grandma McFlurry in the weeks following its release.
