The image was posted to X / Twitter in mid-May 2024 and became the subject of redraws and memes that month.
Origin
On May 13th, 2024, X[1] user @Cyb4rAnGeL posted an image of an Animal Crossing character dressed as a tall goth girl holding a small Mario sprite's hand, writing, "Me and a guy whos a lil gay," garnering over 76,000 likes and 6,900 reposts in a week (shown below). Purportedly, the image was created using artificial intelligence.

The image became the subject of redraws over the following days. On May 16th, 2024, X[2] user @Atorouxx posted a piece of artwork based on the meme that gained over 343,000 likes in six days (shown below, left). On May 17th, X[3] user @AWDtwit posted a redraw that gained over 1,700 likes in five days (shown below, right).
