Actually, they've been controversial for over a decade, ever since Qatar was given the right to host the World Cup. Ever since, massive pushes for infrastructure building have allegedly led to the deaths of over 6,500 migrant workers. Qatar is also not a country known for its human rights, especially due to the treatment of women and the anti-homosexuality laws in place. Because of this, many people are boycotting Qatar's World Cup (or watching it illegally so it doesn't benefit or encourage Qatar whatsoever).
