Robert Pattinson's Wild Accent In 'The Devil All The Time' Brings Out The Jokes

Robert Pattinson has become a much more universally respected actor than he was during his Twilight days, but that doesn't mean he doesn't still encounter some hiccups.
A clip from his new film The Devil All The Time began circulating on Twitter today due to Pattinson appearing to cycle through several iterations of "cliché southern accent" in one minute. In the film, Pattinson plays a southern preacher who sexually abuses young girls. The widely-circulated clip features a tense standoff between him and Tom Holland, who has a gun pointed at him. It would be very dramatic if it were not for Pattinson's ridiculous accent.

In a recent article in Insider, the film's director, Antonio Campos said Pattinson was adamantly against using a dialect coach, preferring to attempt to suss out the character's accent himself. "(Pattinson) would be like, ‘I’m gonna do this thing, and that thing, with a little bit of this,'" he said. "I’d rather have someone come with something weird that’s a choice than something that isn’t thought out. So I knew he would come with something interesting."
"Interesting" is certainly a way to describe Pattinson's accent, but Twitter was a little more biting in their jokes about the clip.

However, not everyone was so down on Pattinson's work.
i respect this so much. this accent rules and is instantly more memorable than a "good accent." https://t.co/YZzurq6Ai2

I’ve met so many people that speak just like this from the south (most of them old white people from Maryland/Virginia area) so I’m not really seeing the issue with the accent he self-taught? https://t.co/lsXyhIH4KD

Regardless of its quality, Pattinson's accent may help the film remain memorable, even if it's not exactly a critical success.
