What Is 'Wplace?' The Viral 'Reddit Place' Copycat That Lets You Draw On The World Map Explained
Artists and meme lovers from around the world are gathering on the increasingly popular website Wplace to show off their talents and rep their favorite things.
The website takes the premise of the beloved, occasional subreddit and April Fools' Day event /r/place and makes it bigger, more competitive and arguably a lot more fun thanks to a few key differences. Now, players are sharing all the best art across social media.
So, what exactly is Wplace, and why is it getting so big? Here's what you need to know.
What Is 'Wplace?'
Wplace is a website designed by Murilo Matsubara that launched this year. The website gives participants an entire map of the world to draw pixel art on. That's apparently over 4 trillion pixels worth of space, giving artists ample room to work with.
The site also features leaderboards so you can see which country is winning by pixel placement.
Some people are drawing art solo, while others are teaming up with friends and people from around the globe to create the most impressive pieces of art possible.
The site is inspired by Reddit's /r/place subreddit, which was launched every few years in the past and gave Redditors a blank canvas to draw with.
The idea is to fight for dominance of the canvas before it expires and disappears. Wplace, however, seems to be a permanent installation, meaning that there's no end in sight to the war for supremacy of the map.
How Is 'Wplace' Going Viral Online?
Wplace has been going particularly viral online since the end of July 2025. There seems to be a substantial number of users on the site now from around the world, including a whole lot from Brazil and Germany.
Now, Wplace players are sharing their art on social media, as well as examples of their favorite art that they've discovered while scrolling around the vast map.
Some of the most popular pieces of art make reference to video games like Deltarune, resulting in areas swarmed with characters like Ralsei and Spamton.
Others are making art that interacts with the environment, like adding ducks to rivers, trees to fields, or placing landmarks in their rightful spots.
Whatever you want to draw, there's plenty of opportunity in those trillions of pixels, and people are rushing to claim their real estate.
